Frequently Asked Questions

What course should I take if I'm new to firearms?

If you're new to firearms, we recommend starting with our NRA Basics of Pistol course. This beginner-friendly program provides a strong foundation in firearm safety, responsible ownership, basic pistol operation, and fundamental marksmanship in a supportive, judgment-free environment.

No prior firearm experience is required.

Do I need to own my own firearm?

No. You do not need to own a firearm to begin training. Firearm rentals are available for select courses, making it possible for first-time students to complete training without purchasing a firearm beforehand. If you're considering purchasing your first firearm, our instructor can also provide general guidance to help you better understand your options and identify equipment appropriate for your training needs.

What is required for a California CCW?

California CCW requirements can vary depending on the issuing county or agency. Generally, applicants must complete the required training, demonstrate applicable firearm proficiency through a live-fire qualification, complete the required application process, and satisfy applicable background-check and eligibility requirements.

Because requirements can change and may differ between issuing agencies, we recommend confirming the most current requirements directly with your local CCW issuing authority.

Do you offer private or one-on-one instruction?

Yes. Tap In Consulting offers personalized, one-on-one firearm training tailored to your experience level, comfort level, and individual goals. Private instruction is an excellent option for students who prefer individualized coaching, want additional practice after completing a course, or would like focused instruction on specific skills.

What should I bring to my training session?

Students should arrive prepared with:
• Valid government-issued photo identification
• Comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather and range environment
• Closed-toe, comfortable shoes
• Any required course materials
• Your own firearm and appropriate ammunition, if applicable

If you are bringing your own firearm, it must be transported safely and in accordance with applicable California laws and range requirements. Your instructor will provide additional equipment or preparation instructions based on the course you are attending.

Do you provide firearms, ammunition, and safety

equipment?

Yes. Tap In Consulting provides eye and ear protection for students during applicable training sessions. Firearm rentals are also available for select courses for students who do not yet own a firearm. For courses where a rental firearm is used, 9mm ammunition may be provided as specified in the course description. Students using their own firearm should bring the appropriate ammunition required for their course.

Please review your course details before attending to confirm exactly what is included.

Is firearm training only for experienced shooters?

Absolutely not. Our training is designed for a range of experience levels, including individuals who have never handled a firearm before. We believe confidence comes from proper education, safe practice, and quality instruction—not from experience alone. Our goal is to help every student develop safe habits and build skills at a comfortable and appropriate pace.

What if I'm nervous about handling a firearm?

That's completely understandable, especially for first-time firearm owners. Our instruction is designed to provide a supportive, professional, and judgment-free learning environment. We focus on safety and education first, allowing students to become familiar with their equipment and build confidence through proper instruction and supervised practice.

Can I purchase a firearm before taking a class?

You can legally purchase a firearm only if you meet all applicable federal, state, and local requirements. However, you do not need to purchase a firearm before beginning training with Tap In Consulting. For new firearm owners, completing foundational training before or around the time of purchasing a firearm can be a valuable way to better understand safe handling, responsible ownership, and what features may be appropriate for your needs.

How do I register for a class?
